EmpowHer Institute is pleased to announce that we have been certified by Points of Light as a Service Enterprise! A Service Enterprise is an organization that fundamentally leverages volunteers and their skills throughout their organization to successfully deliver on its social mission.

Research conducted by the TCC Group, a national program and evaluation firm, found that organizations operating as Service Enterprises outperform peer organizations on all aspects of organizational effectiveness, and are more adaptable, sustainable and capable of scaling their work.

EmpowHer Institute completed an extensive assessment, over 20 hours of training and consulting and extensive internal planning and change to better integrate volunteers in our day to day operations. By achieving this level of excellence and certification, EmpowHer is now better equipped to leverage the time and talent of volunteers and better meet our mission of empowering marginalized teen girls, by providing them the skills they need to graduate high school and live fulfilling, productive lives.

Ways you can volunteer with EmpowHer

Mentorship is an integral part of our EmpowHer Girls Academy. We have found that the dynamics of the mentor-mentee relationship act as a powerful change agent in our girls’ lives when the right match is made. Mentors expose mentees to careers in a multitude of industries thereby broadening their horizons and career aspirations. These positive relationships with mentors result in EmpowHer girls feeling supported and encouraged to set and achieve personal, academic and career goals.

EmpowHer Girls Academy
Middle school mentors meet with their mentees once a month during the EmpowHer class at the school site. Mentors for this age group are the key to early-age intervention and creating future success. Mentors support their mentees as they work on developing character, confidence, self-esteem, and life skills. Time Commitment: 1-2 hours, once per month.

EmpowHer Leaders Academy
High School mentors meet with their mentees on the 3rd Saturday of each month. These high school students have a leading role in the selection of the monthly themes and corresponding workshops, thereby encouraging them to deeply examine new interests and life goals, refine academic plans, and explore career opportunities. EmpowHer Leaders Academy mentors are therefore highly accomplished professionals from the Los Angeles business, education, technology, arts/cultural, nonprofit and civic sectors. Time Commitment: 2 hours, once per month.

Volunteers can present a lesson within their area of expertise to add a new dimension to student learning.  Topics can include goal setting, time management, social media etiquette, stress management, dealing with difficult situations, financing college, and building support systems. We also encourage volunteers to discuss their career paths, as well as professional challenges they have faced. Time Commitment: 1- 2 hours, per speaking engagement.

One of the best ways to expose our girls to new concepts and realities is to provide them with opportunities to explore the real world! Taking them to different businesses and events where they can meet staff members in various departments, such as finance, human resources, marketing, sales, technology, engineering, and entertainment all serve as real life parallels to our program’s goal of exposure. If they can see it, they can be it! Class visits can be to your company or local organization. Time Commitment: Approximately 2-3 hours, each visit.

EmpowHer welcomes volunteers to act as mentors, speakers and interns. Mentors work with middle school girls on specific projects over the course of the school year in the EmpowHer Girls Academy, which develop communication skills, self-image, knowledge of career options, personal finance and self care. Volunteers help introduce students to social, cultural, and economic venues outside their daily routines. Interns provide a variety of needed services based on their own interests and goals.
We provide all training necessary to enable volunteers to work effectively with students.

We are a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.

Gentlemen, We Also Want Your Wisdom and Expertise

Although our programs primarily focus on providing girls with successful female mentors and role models, we still welcome the wisdom and expertise of men who care about the future of inner city girls. For those men who would like to help our cause in a practical way, we would be happy to welcome you to apply to become a volunteer or member of our committees.
