SOCIAL JUSTICE STEAM CAMP

The EmpowHer Social Justice STEAM Camp is a FREE five-week summer program that is delivered in two separate sessions. Social Justice STEAM Camp – Session I is a three-week camp that allows 26 BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) girls, ages 11-15 years-old in Los Angeles County to explores the use of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) as a catalyst to address environmental justice issues impacting people and communities of color.Participants will explore the disproportional impact climate change has on marginalized communities and assess the resiliency of these communities through the lens of justice, equity, and inclusion. The camp consists of hands-on learning experiences and youth-led student projects. Social Justice STEAM Camp – Session II is a two-week camp that allows 5-10 BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) girls, ages 13-18 years-old in Los Angeles County to gain access to ocean STEAM through use of scuba and sailing.

This intensive camp provides an opportunity for girls to learn scuba diving principles and terminology, learn basic scuba diving skills in a pool with highly trained scuba diving instructors, and make two dives in the ocean with highly trained scuba diving instructors and obtain a PADI Open Water Scuba Certification. The sailing portion of camp provides an opportunity for girls to learn to navigate and sail a keelboat. In addition to learning to sail, campers will have the opportunity to earn an American Sailing Association (ASA) basic keelboat sailing certification. Session I and Session II of camp are led by Marine Scientists, Dr. Dijanna Figueroa.
